Festival Focus – Spoon Carving

Damien Ossi makes wooden spoons and other woodenware (also called treen).  Most woodenware is carved using greenwood, or wood that had not dried or cured.  The wood is softer and easier to carve.  The main tools that greenwood workers use are a small axe, a straight knife (often called a sloyd knife) and a hook knife. I salvage my wood from the Public Works wood pile and mulch pile.  The treenware is knife-finished, meaning I do not sand the pieces.  I use organic raw linseed oil to finish them.

Damien and other members of the DC Spooncarvers club will demonstrate the process of creating a piece from tree section to final spoon.

The Greenbelt Maker Festival is April 15, 2017 at Roosevelt Center in Old Greenbelt. Click here for directions and here for more information on how to become an exhibitor. (Spoiler: It is easy!)
