This is the 2015 page. For our current camp schedule, click on Camps in the menu above.
Our summer tech camps, now at the reduced price of $250, are filling up fast, but we’re trying to accommodate all who apply. To reserve a seat, please see the signup page at:
Our first camp is the week of July 13 with a heavy focus on robotics, both engineering and programming. Students with less experience will start out with the popular LEGO Mindstorms kit which has an endless number of challenges from simple rovers to challenge obstacle courses to engines that can compute and solve the solution to a Rubik’s cube. Those seeking advanced challenges will explore alternate programming environments including Java for Android platforms, engineering search and rescue robots, and much more. We even have a Minecraft world built to explore and develop with an army of virtual robot turtle assistants.
Note: Full payment of $250 is now due for the first camp. You may pay online (we’ve fixed the paypal link!), or in person at the MakerSpace. If you are new, here are directions on how to find us!
Our second camp starts two weeks later on July 27 and features a variety of STEM activities. Students will start with a challenge of creating an online interactive story or game animated with the Scratch system. Game design can challenging so we have a fun program to introduce all of the core concepts. In past years we found that kids loved this so much, it actually distracted them from Minecraft! Yes, we have Minecraft available but not what they expect… Our worlds are set up with design and programming challenges that teach core STEM topics including programming in Python, Java, and Javascript, Finally, let’s not forget to learn some “maker” skills to convert design into objects using our 3D printer and new vinyl cutter.
Our last camp, the week of August 10, brings us back to robotics with a focus on the new season for FIRST LEGO League. FLL is a competitive team program for kids 9 to 14 that is held every Fall. Last year the MakerSpace hosted four teams, and supported several more school programs. We had one team advance to the state championship and we’re hungry to return! Each camper will have their own complete LEGO Mindstorms kit and will partner with teammates to learn design, engineering, programming, and tactical FLL skills. And no matter your experience, we will have a challenge that will improve your performance for the FLL season.
If you don’t have a summer week of STEM planned, think about joining one of our camps. We have a great curriculum of activities that the kids will enjoy!
